How Would You Help Your Friends?
Emily and Steve have gone out for a couple months, and lately, Steve has been pressuring Emily to have sex. She really likes Steve, but isn’t sure how she feels about having sex. She’s afraid that if she doesn’t have sex, Steve will either dump her or make fun of her.
If Emily asked you for advice, what would you tell her?
a) If you keep telling him “no”, he’ll dump you for sure and everyone in school will hear about it. Then you’ll never have another boyfriend. Just do it. Everybody else does whether they want to or not. Heck, you might even like it.
b) Try making up excuses every time he asks. Maybe he’ll get tired of asking or get the hint that you really don’t want to do it.
c) “If Steve really liked you, he’d respect your feelings about sex. Try explaining how you feel, and if he doesn’t understand and keeps pressuring you, dump him.”
Lisa and Ted aren’t an official couple, but have gone out for a while and have had sex a few times – without protection. (She says she doesn’t know much about protection, and Ted says he doesn’t like it.) Now Lisa thinks she might be pregnant and she hasn’t said anything to Ted about it. She has just taken a pregnancy test. She can’t look at the results and has asked you, her best friend, to do it for her. When you look at the test, its negative. She’s relieved, and you feel like you have to say something.
What do you say?
a) “You need to be more careful. You should talk to someone about protection and talk to Ted about it, too. If he doesn’t want to use anything, you shouldn’t have sex.”
b) “I know that I can’t tell you what to do, but having sex is stupid. It can lead to all kinds of trouble and it just complicates things. You might not be so lucky next time.”
c) “That was really lucky! Glad it wasn’t me.”
How long until this quiz is over?
a) Now
b) Just a few more questions...
Brad decided a long time ago that he didn’t want to have sex until he was married. It’s important to him. One day, some of the guys are talking after practice, and bragging about all the girls that they’ve had sex with. When they ask Brad about his number, he tells them that he’s a virgin and plans to stay that way until he gets married. The other guys immediately start laughing and teasing him about being a virgin. You come into the locker room and hear what’s going on. What do you say?
a) “Let’s get a copy of “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and teach Brad how to do it?”
b) “Lay off. He’s got a right to make his own decisions, and I think it’s great that he can stick to something that’s important to him. Can’t be easy to do with you jerks giving him a hard time.”
c) You don’t want to get involved, so you turn around and walk back out of the room, but you’re thinking to yourself “What a freak. He must be gay.”
Angie has always been the smartest and hottest girl in your class. You’ve heard that she sleeps with a lot of guys, but you’ve always gotten along with her and you’re friends. You heard this morning (from a reliable source) that she’s pregnant and she just asked if she could talk to you in private about something. She tells you that she’s pregnant; she took a home pregnancy test last night. She asks you what you think she should do. You tell her:
a) “Everyone is talking about it at school. They can’t believe that this could happen to you.”
b) “Who’s the father? Have you told him yet? I’d just freak if that happened to me. But it would be kind of cool to have a cute little baby to take care of.”
c) “Have you talked to your parents? You really should find someone to talk to about this. There are so many decisions to make – ones that will affect the rest of your life. The baby’s life, too. You need to see a doctor, too.”
Julie is sitting outside her house and Chad has just come over to hang out. He’s had a thing for Julie for a long time, but he’s never told her and they just hang out as friends. Julie thinks he’s got a thing for her, but isn’t sure since he’s never said anything.
Julie: So, I heard what happened with you and Ashley last night.
Chad: It wasn’t any big deal.
Julie: I heard that you guys had sex. You don’t think that’s a big deal?
Chad: Naw. The guys all say she’s done it with them. It doesn’t mean anything. Just a way to have a good time. Everyone does it.
Julie: Not everyone. I can’t imagine having sex with just anybody. Plus, you’ve got to worry about her getting pregnant, and disease and stuff. Don’t you worry about that kind of stuff?
Chad: I guess I should. That’s what I always hear. But what are the chances? What would you say if
a) Nothing. He can live his own life. What he does doesn’t matter unless we start to go out.
b) “You know, Chad, I wouldn’t like to go out with someone that has sex just to do it. If I decided to have sex with that person, it’d be like I was having sex with everyone they’ve had sex before me. That just grosses me out.”
c) “You should be more careful. Besides, isn’t sex more important than having a good time?”
